BIO:

Monica Thi is a Chinese-Canadian creative director and video editor based in Toronto, Canada. Through her colourful work, Monica creates with the intention of weaving the fabric of memories and emotions by crafting ethereal and dreamlike worlds for the audience to exist in.

Monica’s philosophy of work is to viscerally capture a quality of empathy - something that is said poetically but with the soul and grit of imperfection that feels human when you see it. Her personal art often explores themes of East Asian diaspora, reflective memory, the essence of youth, and the tapestry of identity.

Monica's strong background in film and design, coupled with her extensive experience in brand development, marketing, and creative direction, positions her to bridge the synergy between artistic vision and commercial success, harmonizing both the conceptual and technical streams seamlessly.

Notably, her recent commercial and video projects have garnered awards, premieres, and nominations, including recognition at the Berlin Commercial Festival (Video, 2023), NOWNESS ASIA, RBC MVP Prism Prize and is a Bronze Recipient for the 2023 ADCC Awards (The Advertising & Design Club of Canada). Most recently, her latest public exhibition was for Toronto’s Year Of Public Art (2021 - 2022) for her film series “Around The Corner, Behind The Sun.” Her films have been screened at festivals such as the New York City Women's International Film Festival, The Toronto Film Review, screened at the TIFF Bell Lightbox, whilst also winning the Best Production Design Award and Best Editing Award at Cinesiege hosted at Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema.

Monica's favourite films are Bi Gan's Long Days Journey Into Night, Makoto Shinkai's Your Name, Dean Fleischer Camp's Marcel The Shell with Shoes On, and Hirokazu Kore-eda's After The Storm.
